Calle Real - Esperanza - Season 6 Episode 2 - Once Upon A Time

The Cuban Timba Grooves Of CALLE REAL Get Killer Air Time And Documentary Feature

Kudos to the music supervisor for Season 6 Episode 2 (Once Upon A Time) of Showtime’s hit thriller DEXTER. Shot on the street in Miami over Cuban coffee, this scene is a heartfelt conversation between two cops, the female one (Debra Morgan - Jennifer Carpenter) notifying the other of a promotion truly intended for the senior male officer (Angel Batista - David Zayas). Playing on the radio in the background is Calle Real’s track ESPERANZA -- where the chorus foreshadows the scene with the words “con esperanza me voy” (I leave with hope). While the music volume is low, the track is instantly recognizable and Calle Real fans will get a real kick out it. Cool use of music makes for great television!

In related news, a hot cha-cha-cha from Chuck Sher can be heard in this same Season 6, Episode 1 (Those Kinds Of Things), where Angel Batista (David Zayas) is in a restaurant having dinner with his sister. There he tells her of his alleged upcoming promotion (we know what happens thanks to Calle Real) and that because, in his opinion, her top is too revealing, people are going to think she is either his girlfriend or a prostitute. Take it easy Angel.

Another track by CALLE REAL from the same Con Fuerza record is Princesa (Timba). This track provides various shades of meaning to the new documentary from Germany's Welt Films called When We're Happy & Didn't Know It. The film is a feature piece on Cuban telenovelas and TV series writer Maité Vera -- a legend in her island homeland. "Princesa" means princess, and the song provides a lively backdrop to the dancers at a party, while also hinting at the subject of Maite's script work: emotional drama (soap operas and romantic series).

Calle Real - Esperanza - Season 6 Episode 2 - Once Upon A Time

The documentary begins in 2000, with Maité Vera’s 70th birthday in Havana, where she lives and works. Even today, the irrepressibly lively Maité continues writing with passion and dedication, creating very special television programs. “The people want to dream. But I think you should dream with your feet on the ground. You can’t take off so high that you land on a cloud,” says Maité about her work, naming Brecht as her biggest teacher. Humberto, her only son, lives with his family in Copenhagen, in exile. The film depicts how the different generations, with their own experiences and points of view, come together in an alien country: discussions and conflicts become loud, humorous and resolved with tenderness, in the Cuban way. The film follows Maité's personal journeys -- her everyday life in Cuba, her encounters with neighbors, friends, and during her work for television, where the camera remains an intimate witness. Written and directed by Kristina Konrad.
